Chapter 16

Melina rejoined her team in the borderland. With Maria now safely away and under the protection of Sonada’s team, she could focus on completing the Chosen’s mission. This was the first task not bodyguard related that he’d ever given her and she had no intention of failing. Though she had always respected and honored him as the Reaper’s Chosen, when he healed her wounds in Black City Melina finally understood what she suspected Kai and Kanna already knew: that he was their true master, irrespective of the Reaper’s wishes.

“What now?” Danner asked. “I didn’t see anything that looked like an orb.”

“Neither did I. But just because these people don’t have what we need on them, doesn’t mean they don’t know who does. We will question the man in the mask and extract the information we need.”

No one questioned her statement. Not that she would’ve accepted any questions. It would be the way she said, because she would accept nothing less than success.

Zan appeared a few feet away. “They’re headed for a parking lot with a single waiting van. Looks like they’re trying to escape.”

“Guards?” Melina asked.

“Only six. I think the other teams have dealt with everyone else.”

“Then let’s hurry before they reach our prey ahead of us.”

Zan led the way and soon Melina spotted the masked man and his henchmen running towards the door to the parking lot. The guards each had a case in one hand and a gun in the other. She could almost smell their fear.

Good, that would make the task easier.

“You three take the guards. The masked man is mine.”

All four shifted as one. Melina paid no attention to her teammates. They were all skilled and would have no trouble with the overburdened men. She put all her focus on the masked man in front of her.

She drew and slashed straight down in one smooth motion, cutting the mask in half without putting a mark on the skin beneath.

The fool actually drew a pistol.

He brought it halfway to bear before her sword sliced the weapon’s barrel off.

The rest of the pistol clattered to the ground a second after the barrel.

His whole body trembled and Melina feared he might soil himself. Or worse, faint.

“I have questions,” she said. “You will answer them, or I will start slicing pieces off of you. Our master is benevolent and wishes to avoid unnecessary deaths. You will find, I think, that you can survive losing a remarkable amount of your anatomy.”

“Just tell me what you want, please.”

“What I want is a Solar Orb. You have none here, that I saw already. But you must know who has one and where I can find it.”

A small, hysterical laugh slipped out between his chattering teeth. “I don’t know what any of these things do or what they’re called. I just sell them.”

“You must keep records.”

Another mad titter. “Records? You think anyone here wants their name recorded anywhere? Do you imagine that I report my income to the tax authorities? They all want to be anonymous.
